text of the letter from
Healthcare Science Ltd,
(Specialists in Sterilization, Disinfection and Environmental Control),
to MRDC Ltd, 30 April 1999
As you are aware, we have been actively involved for several years as Chairmen and Principal UK experts on the British Standards, European (CEN) and International Standards (ISO) Committees and Working Parties concerned with the drafting of performance standards for equipment used in cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of reusable medical devices. It has been of particular interest to us to have the opportunity to assess the latest of a series of innovative products designed by MRDC Ltd for the reprocessing of infant feeding bottles, using moist heat.We would like to place on record how impressed we are with the highly satisfactory outcome of the rigorous microbiological testing regime applied to this product in our testing laboratory. We are particularly pleased to see further developments in the use of heat as the 'sterilizing' agent as this is not only more efficacious than liquid chemical agents used in the 'cold sterilization' immersion method but is also much safer for the infant, carer and environment in respect of the risk of carryover of residual chemical such as hypochlorite (bleach) or other chlorinated by-products. Concern for the safety of such products has prompted some EU and EFTA member states, such as Scandinavia and the Netherlands, to withdraw or restrict hypochlorites and other chlorine releasing agents. It is hoped that responsible suppliers of equipment for reprocessing infant feeding bottles and utensils in the home and clinical settings will take note of these concerns and promote the more effective alternatives using moist heat of which the innovative design of your 'Self-Sterilizing Bottle' is both highly practical and microbiologically effective.
